Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Recycled Lampshade
Let´s transforming these toilet paper rolls into a stunning and sustainable home decor piece.
Step 1: Make flowers
The lampshade is made by several cardboard flowers. Take a roll, flatten it and cut it into slices of 1 cm width (1/2 inch). You will need 10 “slice” pieces to make one flower.
Take a piece of cardboard, add glue on 1/3 of the surface and place a second piece on top. Repeat until all 10 pieces are glue on top of each others.
Open the flower and add glue to hold the last two petals together.
The first flower is made. Repeat many times to make more flowers. The number of flower you will need depends on the size of the lampshade you want to make. To give you an idea, I used 20 flowers to make mine.
Step 2: Create a tip
To hang the lampshade you need to create a ring you will slide around the lamp socquet.
I use this kind of lamp socket. It’s easy and safe to hang any kind of lampshade.
Measure the diameter of the socket and create a cardboard ring slightly larger. I cut strips in a toilet paper roll and glue several layers together to make the ring.
Check that you can slide the ring in and out the socket easily.
Step 3: Assembling the DIY Lampshade
Use a large bowl as support to assemble the lampshade. The size of the bowl will define the size of the lampshade.
Place the bowl upside down and center the cardboard ring on it. Start gluing the cardboard flowers around the ring.
Do it one by one and add as many dot of glue as you can to have a sturdy lampshade.
Take your time to place the flowers and glue all of them until you cover the bowl. Be careful not to glue the bowl.
Remove the lampshade an check that you are happy with it´s shape.
Step 4: Add some color
For added texture and visual interest, you can paint the lampshade. Choose any color that match or contrast your decor. Spray paint is the fastest but you can also use a brush and acrylic paint.
Apply as many coats as necessary to achieve a good coverage.
Step 5: Hang the lampshade
Time to hang the recycled lampshade. Unscrew the socket shade ring (like this one), slide the lampshade and screw the ring back to hold it in place. There you go, enjoy your new lampshade!
